Institute of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Development Studies,Sun Yat-sen University
Founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in Guangzhou in 1924, Sun Yat-sen University enjoys a widespread reputation for its research and studies related to Hong Kong and Macao, by virtue of its multidisciplinary academic setting and the proximity to Hong Kong and Macao in terms of geography, language, and culture. In 2015, the school integrated resources and talents from a wide range of disciplines to found a new faculty under the name of “Institute of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Development Studies” (hereinafter ‘the Institute’).
The Institute functions not only as a research and teaching body but also as a think tank. Today, it ranks among a total of 37 China’s top think tanks where it serves as the only with the expertise in Hong Kong and Macao studies. For the past eight years, it has been conducting research and providing advisory services centered around China’s national strategies of “one country, two systems” and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (hereinafter "GBA"). The three main research areas are illustrated in Figure 1.
The Institute is underpinned by a multidisciplinary research team with permanent staff, postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and master students specializing in economics, political science, sociology, law, etc. (shown in Figure 2).

Over the past eight years, we have published a series of research works that make a national impact. We’ve also organized or participated in different international academic conferences and exchanged with foreign politicians and scholars on various occasions (see illustrations below).

Today, the Institute is working to extend its global research network and increase its visibility among the world’s top think tanks. We are looking forward to more exchanges and cooperation with high-level think tanks and research organizations from around the world.
